What Makes 'the little group' Unique?

What makes 'the little group' unique is our approach to teaching. We combine the disciplines of speech therapy and special needs teaching to form a very special communication based curriculum. Professionals work jointly in the classroom to deliver a visually supported curriculum and structured learning opportunities that focus on teaching strategies for developing attention, communication, social interaction and play skills.

Our Speech Therapists design a programme around the topic being covered by the teachers setting targets for the use of certain words. These words are then incorporated into the classroom curriculum and the combined results are extremely exciting. The main joy of working within 'the little group' Approach is that our children learn to communicate and have fun - all at the same time. This creates a classroom that is both focused, happy and a pleasure to be a part of.

At 'the little group' we aim to:-

  • create positive learning experiences
  • use child orientated and motivating play materials
  • incorporate innovative ideas and creativity within each and every session
  • provide a relaxed and pleasurable time for our children

We adopt, as and if appropriate, autism-specific teaching strategies such as PECS (picture exchange communication system) and TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped children).

Our Special Children with Sensory Issues

Our Sensory Groups work with young children who have a range of hypersensitivities. We provide opportunities to explore textures, smells, tastes in a fun way for the children. With occupational therapy input, our children are assessed and a sensory integration programme is developed.

Our Parent and Child Group meets each once a week to provide opportunities for parents to play with their child, discover the work of 'the little group' and as a gentle introduction to their child's placement.

Here at 'the little group', we place a high importance on our children discovering the world outside of the nursery in order that they can go out and practise their newly acquired skills. They thoroughly enjoy a full range of outings in to the local community and a few more adventurous fun days out.

'the little group' is acknowledged nationally for the significant and positive contribution it has made to the lives of children with autism and also those of their families.

Creating a positive foundation for life, trusted by families for over 15 years
